The scholarship of teaching based on constructivist learning theory emphasizes the need for students to make connection between their previous knowledge and experiences and the new ones they encounter to be able to construct meaning and understanding, avoiding rote learning. Concepts as the building blocks of one’s cognitive structure play a key role in making the process of learning effective, meaningful and enduring for students. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the characteristic features of concepts, their classification, the teaching and learning of concept, the process of concept development, misconceptions and how to prevent and deal with student misconceptions.
