SLAVERY IN CYPRUS (1800-1878)

Slavery is a phenpmenon as old as human history. The instution of slavery, which existed since ancient civilizations, the Ottoman Empire functioned within the Islamic rules. Cyprus Eastern Mediterranean trade routes, as there has been one constant in the center of the slave trade.Altough not as intense as the former periods of slavery on the island of Cyprus and other records indicate the existence of slavery on the island.Religious point of view of non-Muslims to have slaves and there are virtally banned their ownership of slaves. According to census, there were 231 slaves in the intire island.Muslim slave ownership rates were 2,16 per cent in Nicosia. Female slaves (concubines) were used as male slaves in Cyprus. Developments of the progress of removal of slavery in Ottoman Empire influenced the same and slavery on the island had gradually decreased. Freemen live continued to adapt to social life as soon as other free peoples.
