HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS' BELIEFS TOWARD MATHEMATICS

The purpose of this study is to examine the beliefs of high school students towards the nature of mathematics, mathematics learning and teaching. The study group consists of eight students from Anatolian High School, Vocational Anatolian High School, and Science High School. The data of this research designed as case study were collected through interviews with the students. Qualitative data obtained from interviews were analyzed by content analysis method. After analyzing the date, we have seen that; most of the students stated that mathematics is composed of numbers, formulas and problems, and they used the most "useful, universal, precise, connected" words when describing mathematics. Students think that the best way to learn mathematics is to listen teacher, to repeat what teacher show and to solve many problems. Students also think that no one can learn mathematics by herself/ himself. Students describes a good mathematics teacher’s attributes as good narrator, enjoyable, understanding and encouraging. In general, it is seen that students have a traditional perspective on the nature of mathematics, mathematics learning and mathematics teaching.
