Author(s): Erdi KAYA• İhsan SARI

The basic psychological needs of individuals have been examined in various research fields and countries. Recently, need for autonomy, competence and relatedness which were put forward by Self Determination Theory (Deci and Ryan, 2000:227) have been the topic in many fields such as education, sport and health. Therefore, the aim of this research was to determine the basic psychological needs of high school students and to examine the differences in the basic psychological needs according to gender, family income and living place. For this purpose, 207 (47.6%) males and 228 (52.4%) females as a total of 435 high school students voluntarily participated to the research. The Basic Psychological Needs Scale was used as the data collection tool. Results showed that there was not any significant difference in need for autonomy, competence and relatedness scores according to gender, family income and living place. The findings suggested that there might be some other factors that could affect satisfaction of the basic psychological needs for our sample.
