Abstract

Author(s): Ä°mran KARABAG

Idioms, one of the most important elements of language, express the cultural heritage of a nation in the simplest and briefest manner. Idioms reflecting the historical, local, linguistic, sociological identity and the distinctive aspects of a nation in this manner, in the most practical way, are based on mythology, folk culture and divine texts. Idioms are often employed especially in daily language. Since idioms acquire the local characteristics of a nation, it is generally very difficult to translate them into other languages. One of the most important aspects of idioms is the fact that they include a fruitful and an effective expression in a short sentence. Therefore, they are often used in every culture and language. Among the idioms generally expressed in each culture, particularly those regarding the word eye play a very important part. In this study, the idioms including the word eye, which are often indicated in German and Turkish and which are based on textual materials, have been analyzed in terms of cultural, linguistic and historical aspects.
