Abstract

Y?k?lupdur bu cihân sanma ki bizde düzele" (this world has already started to fall apart, do not assume that we can bring it together). Above mentioned lines by Sultan Mustafa III have been commonly used by historians to describe the 18th century Ottoman Empire. As a matter of fact, this poem, very effectively and sarcastically, reveals the political, military and economic corruption, and the anti-corruption movements of its time. Until recently, it was to our common knowledge that Sadrazam Koca Rag?p Pasha produced a nazire as a reply to this poem. The written version of Sadrazam's nazire, however, was not available. Recently, we have discovered that there are six more nazire's available, along with the verse by Sultan Mustafa III, in Turkish Literature Section in Sarajevo Gazi Husrev Bey Library (registration no: R 6843). These nazire's belong to Sadrazam Koca Rag?p Pasha (1698 - 1762), sameddin Efendi (ö. 1788), Mehmed Hâkî Efendi (ö. 1758), Süleyman Dâni Efendi (ö. 1774 - 75), H?fz?zâde Mehmed Efendi. (1775). The magazine was arranged by Abdullah Kantemiri in 1760, in Sarajevo. Thus, it is evident that all the poems mentioned, including Sultan Mustafa's, were written between 1757-1758. This paper, briefly mentions the time of depression in Ottoman Empire, presents the interpretation of the nazire's, and emphasizes the significance of literary work in appreciation of the historical events and the key aspects influencial on society at the time.
