YABANCI DL ÖRETMNDE OTONOM ÖRENME: NEDEN VE NASIL? AUTONOMOUS LEARNING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING: WHY AND HOW?

Abstract

Author(s): Cihan AYDODU

Recently, the necessity of having autonomous learners, especially in foreign language teaching has been debated frequently. Foreign language teaching is one of the most appropriate fields in which students can learn how to become autonomous. However, it is necessary for a student to learn how to learn in order to become autonomous. The student who knows how to learn is the one who can take the responsibility of his own learning; who is aware of his needs and goals; who is able to choose the appropriate sources and materials; who can identify his studying methods and who is able to evaluate his own performance. This study discusses the terminology of autonomous learning and its necessity for learning a foreign language. It also discusses the concept of learning how to learn and exemplifies a sample form for studying and self evaluation which can be applied for the purpose of teaching how to learn.
