WOMEN MARRIED BY ELOPING AND BEING ABDUCTED: A QUALITATIVE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to understand the life experiences, family relations and the feelings of women married by eloping or being abducted. Participants of the study are 18 women who are between the ages of 21-66 and living in different regions of Turkey. Seven of the participants have been abducted and 11 of them have eloped. Qualitative method based on phenomenological approach was applied in the study to be able to present the women’s experiences by using the richness and the diversity of their expressions. Structured interview form was used in the study and the interviews were analyzed by using Maxqda 12. Results indicate that before elopement/ abduction, women have experienced lack of education and not having a voice in the marriage decision. After elopement/ abduction, they have experienced rejection by the family men, lack of marriage rituals, economic dependency and domestic violence. Many of the participants express regret as a main feeling about elopement/ abduction
