It’s getting harder and harder to keep pace with the rapidly developing and changing world. Transferring our values to the new generation is one of these difficulties. Therefore, a very serious and planned value education is needed. Schools are institutions that ensure the continuity of communities by providing the transfer of national and universal values. Textbooks, an indispensable part of the education process, also have an important reference to value transfer. Students acquire national and universal values through literary works in textbooks which were created using all the subtleties and the vocabulary richness of the mother tongue. It is the teacher's responsibility to assist in developing the desirable characteristics or moral values of students. The teacher has also important responsibilities at the point of acquiring, internalizing and actualizing a value. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the teacher opinions about the values in the reading texts of the primary school 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade Turkish text books belonging to various publishing houses approved by the Ministry of National Education. The Turkish text books, which are applied in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades in 2016, were examined within the scope of the research. In addition, 241 pre-service teachers’ perceptions related to the value transfer stated in Turkish text books have been tried to be determined. According to the results obtained from the research, it can be stated that the values in the Turkish textbooks are consistent with the values must be included for teacher perceptions. In both cases, it was observed that the least important value was the value of science. According to teacher perceptions, it has been observed that primary school textbooks have a meaningful difference in terms of professional seniority, school district and teaching class variables in terms of making the students aware of values, preparing them for the future, cooperating and being suitable for family support.
