Abstract

Author(s): Ceyhun SARI

Metaphor, which generally means a transfer process among the meanings of words or the certain features of things, is a concept whose importance is recently realized for linguistic studies. Metaphors as a figure of speech provides easiness and convenience for languages. By favour of them, languages do not always have to produce a new word or expression for a new situation or an object. An existing “meaning” that is suitable to make an analogy between two situaitons or objects is chosen from the world of concepts and hence, a new expression is created. (da??n ba??, birine ayak yapmak, ?stanbul Bo?az? vs.) With this aspect, metaphors is both a dynamic production tool of language and a functional form of expression for literary studies. The metaphors can be seen in not only words but also in stereotyped language units. In this article, reflections and cultural basis and the functioning of “up-down”, an orientational metaphor in Turkish, is going to be examined in the context of idioms. Besides, by doing this, Turkish mentality and way of thinking and its reflections on Turkish is going to be viewed as well.
