TURKEY’S ATTEMPTS TO CONSERVE STATUS QUO IN CYPRUS AND THE OFFICIAL VISIT OF MAKARIOS TO ANKARA

The purpose of this study is to analyze Turkey’s political attitude towards political system in Cyprus Republic founded in 1960. The first step of the study is to discuss if Turkey changed their political opinion on Cyprus after 1960 coup d’etat. Then, it is emphasised that Turkey took some precautions to conserve status quo in Cyprus. In this context, the position of ambassador Emin D?rvana and Makarios’s visit to Ankara are stated. Besides, Turkish Cypriot leaders and their relationship with Ankara are also included in the study. The study is especially unique in terms of handling the ignored issues which took place in Cyprus between 1960 and 1962. It is concluded in the study that Turkey did absolutely anything but didn’t achieve any results.
