TURKEY - YUGOSLAVIA RELATIONS IN THE PERIOD OF ATATURK AND KING ALEXANDER'S VISIT TO TURKEY

The Turkish Republic, which the leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was built, tried to established the close relations with the Balkans that was remained Turkish sovereignty very lom years. Balkanlar has a strategical importance for Turkey's safety, all of these have reflected positively to the Turkey's relations with Balkan countries. The diplomatic relations between Ottoman State and Serbia was interrupted at 1 November 1914. At 1 December 1918, proclaiming his kingdom King Petar Karadjordjevi? declared himself as the head of the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. After the King Petar, Alexander Karadjordjevi? became king at 16 August 1921. After the first world war although there had been a peace duration of time, there were some countries who didn't accept the position and condition of peace. Germany and Italy in Europea and Bulgaria in Balkans had been conducting anti-revisionist foreign affairs policies. But Turkey had been conducting peaceful policies both at home and out of home. That is why Turkey had signed peace treaties with all neighboring countries. Upon the friendship treaty between Turkey and Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes at 28 October 1925 in Ankara, the diplomatic relations was again established. At 3 October 1929, King Alexander Karadjordjevi? changed the name of the country as Yugoslavia. Being effected Atatürk and his works, King Alexander Karadjordjevi? tried to improve the relation between Yugoslavia and Turkey. Turkish Republic has signed bilateral agreements with Balkan States and worked to protect the security and peace of Balkan Region. When approaching the Second World War, Turkey was pioneered to establishment of Balkan Entente in 1934. On Atatürk period, with this diplomacy, Turkey won a respectable place among the Balkan states.
