THE USE OF CONCEPT PUZZLES ABOUT TEACHING OF ELEMENTS OF NATIONAL CULTURE IN SOCIAL STUDIES COURSE

Concept puzzles are one of the tools which could be used in teaching of concepts in Social Studies course. The purpose of this study is to develop concept puzzles about teaching of “Elements of National Culture” in “Culture and Heritage” learning domain included in the 4th grade social studies course. In line with this purpose, five puzzles were developed including anagram puzzle for the elements of national culture, crossword puzzle for handcrafts that reflect elements of national culture, colourful puzzle for the things and objects related to the national culture, honeycomb puzzle for architectural structures that reflect national culture, and puzzles for scrambled words. As it was emphasized in the 2005 Social Studies Curriculum, it was also emphasized in the renewed 2018 Social Studies Curriculum that teaching of concepts had an important place. This study aims at increasing mainly elementary school teachers and teachers’ desire to use puzzles in their activities for teaching of concepts in social studies course.
