THE PROBLEMS OF DISABLED CONSUMERS IN THE SHOPPING ENVIRONMENT AND THE PERCEPTIONS OF NOT DISABLED PEOPLE ABOUT THESE PROBLEMS: A COMPARATIVE FIELD SURVEY

Problems faced by disabled people, which constitute significant part of society, are examined under titles of physical, educational, occupational-income, family and social attitudes. However, general problem classifications and solutions based on solely physical elements are not enough to ensure the integration of them with society. Facilitating the ability of disabled people to make decisions as a consumer and to participate in shopping and leisure time activities, examining problems faced by people with disabilities would be helpful to in terms of shopping and leisure time environments. Disabled people are met not only with physical barriers in social environments especially for shopping areas. Attitudes and behaviors of normal people may reflect another type of disability. Present study aims to contribute to the integration of the disabled with society by determining the problems faced by the physical disabilities and comparing them with non-disabled people. In this direction, problems faced by disabled consumer at shopping and leisure time evaluating environments are depicted firs through secondary data. Then, initial primary data is gathered with survey method by convenience sampling from people with disabilities and non-disabilities in Kirikkale to determine the importance level of these problems. Difference analysis shows that disabled people are more agree with the ideas about shopping abilities and participation ability of leisure activities of disabled people. Moreover, disabled people are more agree with than non-disabled ones about the judgement of non-disabled people trying to look artifically lovingly. Furthermore, disabled people are more likely to participate on facing physical barriers. Finally, it is determined that women and individuals who has disabled neighbour are more agree with the evaluations of the disabled people can participate in shopping and leisure time activities. The results of the research are useful for promoting disabled consumer behaviors and developing positive and correct attitudes for the disabled.
