According to the beliefs of the Muslims, the words of Allah and the words which are certain that Prophet said them cannot be contradictory. If there is a contradiction between two hadiths in appearance (literally), in hadith domain, this condition is called “mukhtalif al-hadith”. Scholars have tried various methods to overcome the contradictions between few hadiths. Shi’ite Muslims believe that, in addition to the prophet, there can be no contradiction between the words of twelve imams they consider as leaders. However, many contradictory words from imams are narrated in their hadith sources. Shi’ite scholars also say that these contradictions are not real contradictions and the reason for each word and behavior is different. Shi’ite scholar Abu Jafar et-Tusi in his book called el?stibsâr fî-mâ’htulife mine'l-ahbâr, narrates about five thousand contradictory words and tries to eliminate the contradictions between them. Most of the justifications Shi’ite Muslims give about the reasons of contradiction are similar to what Sunni Muslims give. Also the method he applied to eliminate the conflict is similar to the method of Sunni Muslims. In this article, the reasons of the contradictions between hadiths according to Shia and the Shi’ite scholar Tusi and the solutions suggested by them will be studied.
