The Collection of Biographies of Kinalizade Hasan Celebi or Tezkiretu’s-suara was written in 1588 (the year of 994 according to the Islamic calendar). It was the fifth collection of biographies of the sixteen century. This collection of biographies is composed of an introduction and three parts -poet sultans, poet descendants of the Ottoman sultans and the actual poets respectively. The sultans and their descendants were put in a chronological order in the first and second part, and the poets were put in an alphabetic order in the third part. The first part refers to the six sultans, namely Murat II, Fatih Mehmet II (Avni), Beyazid II (Adli), Yavuz Selim I (Selimi), Suleyman I (Muhibbi), Selim II (Selimi). The second part refers to the five descendants of the Ottoman sultans, namely Korkud, Cem, Mustafa, Mehmed, Beyazid (Sahi). The third part of the collection of biographies includes the biographies of the 640 poets who lived in the fifteen and sixteen centuries. The introduction part includes the biography of Murad III –given that this collection of biographies was produced during his reign- as well as the biography of Sa%du’d-din to whom the work was dedicated. Totally, there are 640 poet biographies in this work including the biographies of Murad III and Sa’du’d-din. There are 65 copies of this work in the libraries in Turkey and 33 copies in the libraries abroad. When the original manuscripts were examined, it was found that they were copied from the time the work was written until the second half of the twentieth century.
There is a variety of methods used in the studies of manuscripts in Turkey. One of the commonly used methods is textual criticism. Yet, textual criticism can pose difficulties for the researchers if there is a large number of manuscripts to study. Thus, the researcher cannot find a method to be used to underpin their work, neither choose the appropriate manuscripts. This article explores the method used in the textual criticism of the collection of biographies of Kinalizade Hasan Celebi.
