THE INVESTIGATION OF KNIFE CRIMES INVOLVING CHILDREN

Violence is a widespread problem seen in all over the World. When it comes to knife crimes, it is one of the most serious types of violence, which end up death, injuries, disabilities and economical losses. It also causes psychological damages on its victims, who are more likely to use drug and think about suicide. Knife crimes, moreover, can affect the whole community creating a fear of crime, which decreases the quality of life. Children have a particular importance in terms of knife crimes because they involve more frequently with knife crimes. However, knife crimes involving children have not been sufficiently investigated, particularly in Turkey. This current study investigated this phenomenon to better understand it and to produce effective solution. Findings showed that of all the 3061 knife crimes cases in a middle sized city in Turkey 1004 include children, and of all the 12776 individuals involved with these cases either as suspects or as victims 1864 were children. In this study, different characteristics of these 1004 cases and 1864 children were analyzed.
