THE FACTORS AFFECTING THE QUALITY OF LIFE AMONG 65 YEARS OR OLDER INDIVIDUALS LIVING IN THE CITY CENTER OF ÇANAKKALE

The study is conducted to examine the effects of socio-demografic characteristics and physical conditions of individuals on quality of life in elderly. The purpose of the study is to determine the factors affecting quality of life in elderly persons aged 65 years or over living in city center of Çanakkale. The population of the sample consists of 1001 elderly people living in the city center of Çanakkale. The mean age is 74.1±6,8 years. Of the 45% (n=450) are women and 55% (n=551) are men. The median value of the EUROHIS-QOL 8-item index scores is 68.23±16,08 from a total score of 100.

The results show that the quality of life scores of the subjects who have higher household income, who receive social support by government, who are pleased with aging, and who are hopeful for the future are found to be higher than the others. On the other hand elderly people who had falled in last 6 months in home and who need care have lower quality of life scores.
