This study aims to determine the factors affecting the preferences of the 9th-grade students’ for secondary education institutions. The sample of the study was formed by 470 9th grade students, attending secondary education institutions in Pamukkale District of Denizli in the 2017-2018 Academic Year. ‘‘General Information Form’’, developed by the researchers, was used to get the demographical information of the families and the students, involved in the research. Also, another measurement tool named ‘‘ The Factors Affecting The Secondary School Institutions Preferences of The 9th Grade Students’’, developed again by the researchers, was used to define the factors affecting the choices of the students for their secondary school. As a consequence of the researchers’ professional experiences and their observations about the topic, the measurement tool was designed as five-dimensional including ‘‘Education’’, ‘‘Family’’, ‘‘Individual’’, ‘‘Economy’’ and ‘‘Guidance’’. In the analysis of the collected data, frequency, average, standard deviation, percentage, Mann Whitney U Test and Kruskal Wallis-H Test were applied. As a consequence of the tests applied to the students who are the subject of the research, significant differences were found depending on the number of the sibling at home, the professional and educational status of the parents, and the economic situation of the family
