With the development of new communication tools and the increase in i nterest in them, the use of social media is increasing day by day, and this causes communication disconnections among individuals. The family institution, which is the most basic building block of the society, was also affected by this situation, and the negative effects of social media among spouses reached an observable dimension. While increasing the time spent in social networks leads to a decrease in the time periods that family members spend together, confidence problems have arisen between spouses because these environments enable virtual flirting and virtual deceptions. While constantly interacting with others in the virtual world damages emotional relationships, it can lead to the termination of the institution of marriage. Through social networks, which are an indispensable part of our daily life, our relationships, the way we communicate and our culture have changed. Decreasing the satisfaction of individuals from their lives and marriages leads to an increase in the orientation towards social media platforms. Individuals who cannot find the happiness they are looking for in their real life spend more time in the virtual environment, which causes some problems between their spouses. Individuals who try to satisfy their hunger and emotional emptiness in the social media environment may tend to use social media excessively and out of purpose, and may act in deceit. While sharing and likes on social media occasionally cause controversy, it damages the family institution. Individuals who are constantly trying to socialize in a virtual environment can neglect their spouse and children, which causes individuals to become alienated from one another. In the study, the effects of the use of social media on the family institution are considered theoretically and suggestions are made.
