“THE EFFECT OF MYSTICISM IN THE OPERA KEREM”

Abstract

The fact that the cultural fundamentals of the Turkish Republic based on national culture causes the selection of subjects related with the Turkish history in the production of performance arts and also brings into question composing original operas based on the folk tales. This cultural enviroment and official art policies influence both Ahmed Adnan Saygun and Selahattin Batu. The opera Kerem, the first grand national Turkish opera, is based on the folk tale Kerem and Asl?. In Kerem the opera, Kerem’s mystical travel that has three phases is told. This interpretation of the artists originates from their sufistic believes that have rooted from Mevlana. So the libretto is evaluated in this direction and Abdülbaki Gölp?narl?’s works are taken as reference.
