In this study, population development of Çatak district of Van province in repuplican period, current structure, educational status and geographical distribution of district population are discussed. Throughout the history of the Republic, the population development of Çatak district has been affected by many factors. The factors such as wars, terrorist incidents, and economic insufficiency caused the population of the district to move towards the city. The population of the district, which was 13562 in 1899, fell down to 3382 in the first census year of Republican History (1927). The population of the district, which decreased by 75% in 28 years. It ha s increased more than doubled between 1927-1935. Due to the impact of World War II., population of Çatak declined by about 17% in 1940 compared to the previous census. The population of the district increased steadily from 1940 to 1985 and exceeded 24 thousand. Between the years 1985 and 1990, the district population declined by 12.5%, but from 1990 to 2010, it entered a steady upward trend. In 2010, the population of the district was recorded as the highest during the history of the Republic. Since 2010, when the population of the district exceeds 25 thousand, the population has been continuously decreasing.According to 2017 data, the population growth rate in the district is around -2.6%. The rural population is primarily influential in the change of population profile. As a matter of fact, the rural population constitutes approximately 72% of the population of the district. The fact that about 72% of the population is living in the countryside shows how effective the rural population is in total population change. While the urban population, except for 2014 and 2017, is generally on an upward trend, the rural population has a tendency to fall mostly after 1990. In the district where approximately 60% of the population is made up of groups under the age of 24, the rate of literacy is about 94%.
