THE CHANGE OF ISTANBUL STREETS FROM THE 19TH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT

Abstract

Author(s): Mustafa KAHRAMAN

In the study, 20 sheets, which are thought to be produced in the 19th century and known as the Ayverdi Maps, were coordinated and then the streets were numbered and compared with the streets. In this comparison, the formal changes of the roads, the state of dead end and the changes in their names are tried to be determined. As a result of these transactions, it is seen that a significant part of the streets and streets have not survived. Within the historical wall, the area with the most disappearance or geometry is the middle section. The main reason for this is that the area was destroyed by fires and a deep urban planning was made in the region. When we evaluate the changes in the streets in a cul-de-sac street, in the period until the present day, the dead end streets have been completely disappeared and connected to a road close to it and the street has been lost. However, it was determined that a significant portion of the dead end streets in the study area occurred after the 19th century. As a result of the analysis of the names of streets in the study area, it was determined that most of the names changed. Moreover, this change has been controlled on fixed roads. Even though the roads on the historic peninsula have not disappeared, their names have been changed. Some of these changes are thought to be aimed at eliminating confusion due to the fact that there are many roads from the same name.
