SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS IN BLACK SEA VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE; WOOD AND STONE

Sustainability within architecture includes such titles as economy of sources, energy conservation, water conservation, material conservation, lifecycle design, strategies, pre-construction phase, construction phase, post-construction phase, precise design, conservation of natural conditions, urban design, urban planning, design for person comfort,…etc. Sustainable design is supposed to provide and preserve cultural texture, life style and comfort as well as conserving human health and comfort.

Eastern Black Sea Region differs from other similar regions due to its specific natural environment and architectural heritage. Local foremen and residents have built dwellings and several similar architectural structures that are infinitely in accord with extreme geographical conditions by elaborating with details using their own knowledge and skill. This characteristic texture that have been completely formed with local sources including from construction material to labor force takes on a value, significant in terms of ecology. In this sense, Eastern Black Sea Region is so important with regards to sustainability and ecology in both organization of domestic architecture and house settlements.

In this study, the signs of sustainable architecture are examined sampling the vernacular houses of Eastern Black Sea Region. The area work focuses on the structures found along the coastline from Trabzon to Rize. In this regard, the sustainable design approaches related to building envelope are evaluated analyzing construction practices and materials used for both the vernacular houses that remain standing and today’s vernacular houses. Traditional construction practices, especially its physical features, have been recently preferred for new structures.
