SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE SETTLEMENT HISTORY OF NORTHWESTERN ANATOLIA (BALIKESIR AND CANAKKALE)

Northwest Anatolia Turkey’s gate opening Europe has became an attractive settlement for settlers throughout history since prehistoric times In result of excavations and surface surveys, It is understood that there were settlements in Northwestern Anatolia in the Paleolithic, Epipalaeolytic, Neolithic and Chalcolithic Periods. Cities of Çanakkale and Bal?kesir have been included in our study topic. We studied, we encountered settlements belonging to Paleolithic Period-in Bal?kesir five and six in Çanakkale and six in Bal?kesir, settlement only in Çanakkale one belonging to Epipalaeolytic; settlements belonging to Neolithic six in Çanakkale and three in Bal?kesir, and finally settlements belonging to Chalcolithic eleven in Çanakkale and fourteen in Bal?kesir It was identified that Most of these settlements were established in areas close to wetlands which is basic need of human life. The aim of this study is to reveal the earliest settlement history of northwestern Anatolia, starting from the Paleolithic period, which is the first of the prehistoric ages.
