SOIL GEOGRAPHY OF THE DISTRICT OF HASSA (HATAY)

Abstract

Author(s): Ahmet ATASOY

The study aims to determine the characteristics of the Soil Geography of the District of Hassa. Therefore, the factors affecting the soil formation were investigated and soil samples from the land were analyzed. The results of the analysis were converted to thematic maps through the techniques of Geographical Information Systems. Many various figures were drawn in accordance with the purpose of the study. Based on these works, soil series were determined and their characteristics were explained. According to new soil taxonomy, there were four soil types in Hassa: inceptisol, andisol and entisol, alfisol. Due to the spatial distribution, the large part of the soil is in the inceptisol order, which is substantially a result of tectonic movements and volcanic events. According to the study results, the soils are generally national loam textured, possessed a slightly alkaline (pH) reaction and there was no sodication problem. It was determined that the soils’ exchangeable K was at high level while exchangeable Ca and MG were quite inadequate and the soils contain insufficient organic matter.
