SOCIOLOGICAL CONTEXT OF THE PROFESSIONS IN YASAR KEMAL’S NOVELS

Abstract

Author(s): Aziz ŞEKER

In his novels, Yasar Kemal treated social life deeply. In his novels set in Cukurova, he discusses the social structure that is transforming in all aspects within the context of individual-environment interaction. Also in his novels set in Istanbul, he focuses on many tragic aspects of city life changing around major problems. When describing the society in which his main characters live, Yasar Kemal also places secondary characters in the texture of the novel. These secondary characters may not fully direct the dynamics of the novel; but with some of their characteristics, they enrich the content of the novel. Of course, the situation of a blacksmith, scrivener or shoemaker holding a job in the community may not be more important to the average reader than the main characters. However, researchers who are interested in professions and careful readers who are interested in the subject should not be forgotten. Yasar Kemal fulfils an important sociological function for such people. While revealing the professions in Yasar Kemal’s novels in this study, we will also examine the sociological context of these professions
