Geographical indication applications have a great influence on the protection of the products’ place and importance at the economic and cultural life, which have very closed relation with their geography. Also, it is important for transferring the products generation to generation as originally. Another thing, it provides a significant contribution to not only local culture and economies but also the national economy and values. Geographical indications application prevents much unfair competition and imitation (warez) product trade in a wide range of products as from regional dishes and fruits to carpets. Until 2013, 167 products qualified as geographical indication by Turkish Patent Institution. In our study, we determine geographical indications for Hakkâri, which are rug, walnut, honey, tobacco and local foods, furthermore their importance for the region has been revealed. Due to limited economic activities and significant public safety issue, Hakkâri’s image was negatively affected in publicity. Because of this reason, we strive for to introduce the hidden, forgotten and/or ignored values of Hakkâri which is the least developed parts of Turkey. Our main target is to provide the products are taken the scope of geographical indications, which are specifically shaped by geography of Hakkâri, then generate economic gains to the local people.
