Having been a shaykh al-Islam in the seventeenth century, Dâmadzâde Abu’l Hayr Ahmet Effendi, became one of the influential figures due to his scholarly and scientific studies. He contributed not only to Islamic Studies but also bestowed so many studies related to the fields of Medicine and Literature. As we examined the work of shaykh al-Islam Ahmet Effendi named as Fetâvâ it can be said that this work point outs some genuine details related that in the daily of the Ottoman society, how people try to solve the cases that they had already dealt with and how they answered when they were questioned on those. It is recognizable that this work would take its place in the collection of Fetâvâ Mecmuas which were composed of Fatwas of shaykh al-Islams and muftis. Fetâvâ Mecmuas i.e journals enlighten us about the social structure of the population additionally its scholarly position and thus those mecmuas are regarded as a vital source for our past. As this significance of Fetâvâ, it is necessary to give information about the life of Abu’l Hayr Ahmed Effendi and his works. This article also offers some instances of fatwas related to certain issues and compared those fetwas cases with the cases of the institutional Structure of the Presidency of Religious Affairs that is the only see to give a fatwa at present.
