SAFRANBOLU VARIANT OF BEY BÖYREK IN TERMS OF TEXT, TEXTURE AND CONTEXT

Abstract

Author(s): İbrahim GÜMÜŞ*

The Book of Dede Korkut is a unique work of the Turkish cultural ecology. There are twelve epic stories in the Book of Dede Korkut. The third one is named as “Kam Püre Oglu Bamsi Beyrek Boyu “. The narrative of Bamsi Beyrek has so far been transferred from generation to generation in a face-to-face communication environment and in an oral cultural environment. Variant (equal) texts have been formed since then. In the primary culture, about thirty texts (variants) of the narrative of Bamsi Beyrek were determined. While some of the equa or variant texts have been compiled from the primary oral cultural environment, the context has been sometimes ignored. In compiling studies, the focus is often on the idea of obtaining the best text. This situation causes the text to be excluded or even ignored. For this reason, we still have only texts that have been detached from the texture and the context. Due to the difficulties experienced in the definition of folklore products, Alan Dundes states that the fieldwork must be studied by taking into account the text, texture and context. A folkloric product cannot be described and analyzed based on only one of them. An ideal definition can be made by evaluating these three levels together. The texture is the smallest building block of a language in verbal forms. In other words, in oral forms of folklore, it consists of texture and language-related characteristics. The text is the re-transmission or performance of any product in a primary oral cultural environment. The context includes everything that directly or indirectly affects the text The text of Bey Boyrek by Ahmed Baha (Gokoglu) in Safranbolu Hacilar Obasi in 1929 was compiled in its context in a well form from Lady Emine’s Ahmet Baha recorded a lot of information about the source person when performing the compilation, the internal and external characteristics of the place where the compilation was made, people who took part in the space, and how the source person acted throughout the narrative. Ahmet Baha, who recorded the text, environment and conditions together with the text of Bey Boyrek, published his work in nine sections in Bartin Newspaper in 1931 His work today allows us to better analyze both the oral text and the living environment of the text at that time. In this context, the text of Bey Boyrek, which was compiled from Safranbolu, was analyzed in the terms of text, texture and context and also in terms of episodes, it was examined comparatively with the story in Dede Korkut Book. The texts of Bamsi Beyrek and Bey Boyrek largely overlap in terms of many motives such as childlessness, social status of the hero's family, birth, name giving, helping hero, horse of the hero, falling in love, obstacles, being captured, returning home, disguise and so forth. In Bey Boyrek, there are differences like the hero who is not bethroned in the craddle with his lover, the fact that the girls and the horse has the same name, her being a part of Sultan’s family.
