PULEVSKİ’S 1875 DICTIONARY PRINTED IN BELGRADE AND THE WEST RUMELIAN DIALECT CHARACTERISTICS THEREIN

Abstract

Author(s): Abidin KARASU

The sources of Anatolian and Rumelian dialects are mostly written in Ottoman alphabet employing Arabic letters. Since Arabic letters cannot exactly reflect Turkish language sounds, it is quite difficult to follow the evolution of phones in the Turkish language in these works which are written using this alphabet. That’s why the books written in different alphabets and which carry Anatolian and Rumelian Turkish dialect characteristics are vitally important for researchers as well as very valuable from the point of Turkish language history. The 1875 trilingual ??????????? (Triazichnick) Macedonian-Albanian-Turkish dictionary which has been prepared by Macedonian linguist and historian Georgia Pulevski with Cyrillic alphabet and printed in Belgrade in the state printing house, is a work which carries these features. Even though the 160 page work is named as a dictionary, it has a text book character because it provides general information on religious subjects, geography, botanic, minerals, flora, fauna, languages, government, etc. The book that is written with Cyrillic alphabet is extremely important in shedding light on the state of West Rumelian dialects in the 19th century. In our study, information about the content of the dictionary is provided and West Rumelian characteristics of the Turkish language in the book are analyzed. Eight phonetic criteria, which have been determined by G. Nemeth for West Rumelian dialects, have been taken as the method and the analysis is carried out accordingly. These criteria have been investigated under relevant titles, the words in the dictionary have been indexed and the page numbers on which they appear have been provided. As a result, it is determined that the language in the dictionary carries West Rumelian Turkish dialect traits. 8 criteria among the ones Nemeth determined suit the phonetic characteristics in the work and the usage of present tense suffix presents a duality with –(i)yor and –(x)r. The goal of this study is to contribute to the historical development research of the West Rumelian dialects.
