PRESERVICE TEACHERS’ EFFORTS TO LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND METHODS THEY USE LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE: MARMARA UNIVERSITY SAMPLE

The aim of this research is to detect whether or not preservice teachers made an effort to learn a foreign language and which methods they use to learn or improve it. The participants of the study are 265 preservice teachers studying in 9 different departments with the exception of the foreign language education department at Marmara University Atatürk Faculty of Education between the 2018-2019 academic years. The data of research in which mixed method is used were collected through a questionnaire and making interviews with preservice teachers. According to the findings, most of the preservice teachers have declared that they don’t make an effort to learn a foreign language mostly because of the lack of time to allocate for foreign language learning. The majority of preservice teachers pointed out that they use the internet and social media while learning a foreign language such as watching movies, YouTube videos, using mobile applications, following pages on social media.
