In this study semantics that is one of the sub fields of linguistics and place of semantics in foreign language and word teaching is dealt with. The purpose of the study to demonstrate how significant meaning and semantics that cannot be considered to handled separately in teaching foreign language, therefore it is inevitable to mention their contribution in teaching environment. In accordance with this purpose, the information on semantics and foreign language teaching is composed through literature review. Taking into account today’s communicative language teaching and communicating skill, the necessity of usage of each sub topics by thinking different meaning of language in every communication situation. To benefit from semantics, when the words are being taught, identifying basic contexts of foreign language is focused on. Language usage for communication means brings semantic function to the fore. Thus, it is necessary to give importance to the meaning of the word and the dimension of context when foreign language teaching is carried out. Indeed, word teaching is closely related to semantic teaching. Accordingly, word teaching is also related to semantics and context-based teaching. Semantic value of each word exist in text that they are written. Since every word of foreign language cannot be learnt, in-class activities should be prepared on the basis of communication, meanings that are commonly used or used in Daily life and contextual texts. Furthermore, teachers should be aware of the language features that change. Thereby the contribution for enriching students’ vocabulary can be achieved by benefiting from semantics.
