ON STYLE AND STYLISTICS-1: PRELIMINARY ORIENTATIONS

While speaker or writer’s own distinct language uses in any verbal or written expressinon is creating ‘the style’, the examination of these different stylistic expreesions that is thought in the context of rhetoric or science of eloquence in both Western and Eastern literatures for centuries is defined and evaluated as ‘stylistics’ (and/or ‘biçembilim’).

‘Stylistics’ in the time period we live is a branch of linguistics that applied the modern linguistic theory and methodology to stylistic researches, and is a discipline that researhed the styles of the use of language and language styles in use. However, there are different understandings in this issue.

In this article, it have been made in preliminary orientations on style and stylistics, including the aforementioned different understandings.

In this context, it is focused on topics suc as the concepts, definitions, topics, aims, functions, methods and properties of style and stylistics. (The issues such as … ‘the short history of style and stylistics’, ‘the theories and classifications of stylistics’ will form the subjects of the next articles.)
