A rich mushroom culture has emerged in and around Sinop due to its suitable ecological conditions. The locals, who turned this richness into a nutritional and economical advantage, have created an interesting diversity in naming these mushrooms. 233 denominations have been identified in the region for 25 types of mushrooms. The diversity in the denomination has revealed the ability of the Turkish language in conceptualizing objects, articles and living beings. In this study mushroom denominations in Sinop and its environs are interpreted from the point of onomastic and they are classified according to their characteristics. It is observed that often components like shape, colour, taste, sound, odour, place of growth and beliefs have been determinant in denomination. `Granddads beard` as it is white and stringy, `tongue-twister` as it is bitter, `cuckoo mushroom` as it grows, when the cuckoo sings in spring and `dervish mushroom` as it is believed to cure all sorts of illnesses are some of the denominations.
