MIGRANT SMUGGLING: AN ANALYSIS IN THE FRAMEWORK OF MIGRANT AND SMUGGLER RELATIONSHIP

The phenomenon of international migration that is facitilitated and increased in parallel with the improvement of globalization and communication opportunities, it has been transformed in to irregular migration by the states following an anti immigration policy, in last decades. Especially Western States’ anti immigration policies, bring tight border controls. However, tightening border controls, does not stop irregular migration but rather increases irregular migration and migrant smuggling. Studies show that, most of irregular migrations are carried out with the help of migrant smugglers. In this context, a professional migrant smuggling acvitiy that has been increasing and can not be prevented, for last decades, has been taking place in various parts of the World. Whereas migrant smuggling is seen frequently in Turkey, due to it is between emigrant countries and immgirant countries, which have tightened border controls. In this study, a relationship between migrant and smuggler and its effect on migrant smuggling, which has been on the agenda of politics, media and academic community in recent years, has been investigated. And it is demonstrated that, there is a trust in the relationship between smugglers and migrants owing to their social networks and this plays a facilitating role in the continuation of migrant smuggling.
