MELIORATIVE AND PEJORATIVE IN GERMAN AND TURKISH

Abstract

Author(s): Funda ÜLKEN

A language change is a universal phenomenon, which occurs in all languages and is especially observed in the field of lexic. Not only is the external form of the words, e.g. the phonemes, but also their meanings. The present work deals with language-changing at the level of lexic in German and Turkish, with a focus on the semantic aspect. The terms pejorization (meaning enhancement) and meliorization (meaning degradation) are presented with Turkish and German examples and also the motifs for the meaning change in these areas are demonstrated
