LIFE OF ALİ CEVAD AND HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE TURKISH GEOGRAPHY

Abstract

Author(s): Mehmet Akif CEYLAN

Born in Scutari (Uskudar) town of Istanbul, Ali Cevad is the son of Yanya Treasurer Mehmet Emin Nuzhet Efendi, and elder brother of the Scutarian (Uskudarli) reputed poet Mustafa Safi. It is possible to say that Ali Cevad is from a well-established and highbrow family, and received decent education. Hence, many of his works that are considered important even today particularly on geographical, historical and religious subjects are an indication of this fact. Graduated from the Military College in Istanbul, Ali Cevad served as a geography teacher at numerous military high schools, and held military positions such as infantry captain, infantry major, Hamidiye Battalion Lieutenant Colonel, and Bursa Redif Regiment Colonel. He was promoted and rewarded due to his achievements in his last mission. Having been exiled along with his peers following proclamation of the Second Constitutional Monarchy, Ali Cevad returned to Istanbul after his remission and retired from service. Short time after his return, he passed away on 30th November 2013 in Scutari (Uskudar), and was buried in the Karacaahmed Cemetery. This paper deals with the life and works of Ali Cevad, who was a military officer, teacher, and author from Uskudar town of Istanbul, and about whom no records other than a short piece of information not exceeding a few paragraphs have been found, even though he had left considerably important works in the Turkish history of science. Particularly the geographical works of Ali Cevad and his contributions to the Turkish geography are discussed relatively in details, and assessed from different points of view. Thus, it has been endeavoured to contribute to making this scientist, some works of whom have been re-printed today and referenced for many times in academic publications and who was one of the encyclopaedists in the last period of the Ottoman Empire, and his works widely known.
