INVESTIGATION OF READING STYLES OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

The purpose of this study is to investigate the reading styles of secondary school students with regards to different variables. Exploratory correlation research method was used in the study. The sampling of the study consists of 249 secondary school students studying in the West of Turkey. As the instrument for data collection in the study, “Reading style Inventory” whose reliability and validity studies were carried out by ?ahin and Var??o?lu, was used in the study. As the collected data exhibited normal distribution, ttest and one-way variance analysis were used in the study. The data obtained with this study reveal that secondary school students used silent reading style the most and SÖZ choir the least. Female students were found to use reading styles more effectively than male students. Significant differences were found in the study between students’ reading styles and students’ gender, the state of liking or not liking to read, the grade that they get from the course of Turkish Language, the number of books, the literary genres that they are interested in. The students whose families routinely read books every day and who name themselves as advanced readers were found to have adopted different reading styles.
