IDLENESS AND CONSPICUOUS CONSUMPTION IN YAKUP KADRİ' NOVELS

Abstract

Author(s): Yahya AYDIN

On his novels “Hep O ?ark?, Kiral?k Konak, Nur Baba, Sodom ve Gomore”, Yakup Kadri scrutinizes daily living of superclass which he was member of it at one time and supersclass' sense of fun, consumption and jolity habits, cultural and economical fabric. General qualification of this class is idleness and conspicuous consumption and that the members of this class spend their times in a non-productive manner is noticable. The nature of this class is conservative. While the old rules and etiquette are the privilege of this class, these are also obstacles for the new classes to change of their status. Consumption of certain substances or certain pleasures are special to this class. This class is trying to put its own distinctness and richness on clothing-adornment and gorgeous home furnishings. Parties and balls are display of wealth and as well as display of owner' spending level. The existence of the other legalizes the comsumption by the reason of jealusy, arrogance, envy and incapable hatred. In the novels, the way to gain dignity is through wealth - money and marriage with military man
