HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION RITUALS IN THE BALKANS: CASE OF MACEDONIA

People in all societies; mark the transition from one stage of life to another such as birth, parenting, graduation, marriage, promotion, retirement and death. In this context matura, “maturity test” is a practise in all education programmes in Balkan countries such as Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Bulgaria etc. All high school learners in these countries who think of attending university have to be successful in definite lessons. Each high school student who wishes to attend the university in the aforementioned countries must be successful in the exams they take from the designated courses. For the students who pass the exam and have the right to graduate from high school, the graduation celebrations followed immediately include the school spirit and invented rituals for the award of graduation titles. In this respect, matura “maturity test” celebrations are traditional practices that contain the ritual which has multiple profanities. In this study, the traditional matura celebrations in Macedonia will be evaluated based on the material obtained from the field research, based on the quotations of the source persons and the transition rituals will be emphasized.
