GENDER INEQUALITY IN TERMS OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT IN TURKEY: A COMPARISON BETWEEN TURKEY AND THE EUROPEAN UNION

Abstract

Author(s): Mevlüdiye MEK

This paper has two aims which are to analyse gender inequality in terms of human development and make a comparison between Turkey and the European Union. According to the analysis, there is a substantial gender inequality in adult literacy rate, schooling rate and estimated per capita gross domestic product in Turkey. On the other hand, when a comparison is made between Turkey and the European Union in terms of the indicators of human development, a great distiction is observed. In fact, there is a gender inequality both in Turkey and the European Union. However, the inequality in Turkey is higher than the one in the European Union. Especially in adult literacy rate, schooling rate and the estimated per capita gross domestic product, there is a need for improvement in favor of women. This is essential for the economic development and growth of Turkey. On the other hand, average life expectancy of women is higher than men in Turkey and the European Union.
