Abstract

Author(s): Murat KARACA

The fairs that have been guessed to be in social, economic and cultural life since the beginning of First Age include meanings like “assembly area”, “gathering place” and “meet in periodic times” moving from the Greek word “panêgyris”. The fairs which have become amusement and cultural fulfillment places just after being only an economic activity have taken the present form combining trade and amusement. The present fairs have changed partly due to changing conditions and technologic developments; however, the form of traditional fairs didn’t change. While the alive animal commerce ended in some fairs, in the other fairs some innovations and changes happened during the fair amusements with changing tecnology. Beside some fairs have continued as fastival and exposition. The economic function of fairs that are important fulfillment places of traditional folk drama and traditional amorousness custom, came to the forefront and scientific studies concentrated in this area. Especially in comparison with the many studies on fair commerce in the fields of business, economy and economics, the studies on the investigation of fair organizations in the main disciplines of folklore paled beside it. In this study, it is aimed to determine and evalvate the fair organizations according to functional folkloric theory. Besides the main functions of folklore, some determinations and evaluations for the economic, political, lawful, psychological, social and cultural functions are included.
