Abstract

Seyit Ahmet Tevfik Efendi, who died in Thessaloniki on May 14, 1842, is one of the descendants of Gazi Evrenos, conqueror of the southern Balkans. His immense wealth was recorded in the Thessaloniki Kadi Registers. The value of Ahmet Tevfik’s inheritance was 1,154,004 kuru?. This figure was perhaps the highest amount recorded in the Thessaloniki Tereke Registers. In a study published in 2016, it was found that Ahmet Tevfik Efendi owned about 19% of the total assets of 365 workers who died in Thessaloniki in the first half of the 19th century. Ahmet Tevfik's affiliation to Gazi Evrenos’ lineage, as well as having the Dergâh-? Mualla Kap?c?ba??s? and Istabl-? Amire stakes contributed to the accumulation of Ahmet Tevfik’s wealth. Ahmet Tevfik’s assets, which included 11 farms in various cities and villages including Thessaloniki, Vardar-i Kebir, Vardar-i Sagir, Yenice-i Vardar, Karaferiye; numerous cattle and sheep, around 20 different kinds of horses and mules, a significant amount of cash, bonds and cereals, and further wealth, must have invoked the envy of his contemporaries. The most important feature of Ahmet Tevfik’s estate is that despite its unique wealth, it was not able to meet the claims of over eighty Muslim and non-Muslim creditors. With the heirs assuming the 1731 kuru? of tax debt, the estate could then be closed without being subject to the transactions. In short, Ahmet Tevfik's Tereke contains important data for both traditional household goods and trade, credit and debt relations between Muslims and non-Muslims
