EVALUATION OF THE IBNU’L-QAYSARANI AL-MAQDISI’S “TAZQIRATU’L-MAWDUAT” IN TERMS OF TEXTUAL CRITICISM

Abstract

Author(s): Nevzat AYDIN

In recent years, the central argument on the hadith methodology is that the methodology of hadith is mainly depending on isnad and the text is neglected. This criticism, also find voice on the allegation that the system which differentiates the “mawdu narrations” from “sahih hadiths” is not so efficient or not reliable. Especially the question on the criteria which enables to reach the decision that the hadith narration is authentic or fabricated should be investigated by considering these views. In this article, the “Tazqiratu’l-Mawduat” of Ibnu’l-Qaysarani al-Maqdisi who was one of the early authors of mawduat literature is evaluated in terms of textual criticism. This work aims to focus on the Maqdisi’s criteria on hadith text like how he decides for one spesific narration that it is fabricated or sahih and how he evaluates a text. Having considered this perspective we can summarise the main goal of this work as to find the examples of textual criticism in the early mawduat literature.
