ENVIRONMENTAL NOISE POLLUTION IN THE CITY OF ATAKUM SAMSUN

Abstract

Author(s): Kemalettin ŞAHİN

The aim of the study was to explore sources of noise pollution and to make environmental noise measurements in Atakum (Samsun) city. For this aim, the environmental noise measurements was conducted in the eastern part of Atakum in the period between May 2012 and November 2012. According to the results of the measurements, traffic noise is considered as one of the important sources of noise pollution. The noise pollution were determined as 70-80 dB (A) at the vicinity of Atatürk Boulevard where the traffic flow density is higher. The factors as weather conditions, day and night times, seasons and speed, weight and types of vehicles affect environmental noise pollution level. There is a direct relation between vehicle speeds and the environmental noise level. Meteorological elements such as precipitation and wind cause increase in environmental noise level. As a result, defining the up limit for vehicle speeds as 50 km / h. on Atatürk Boulevard, which is located in a residential area, is important in terms of the contribution to the reduction of the noise level.
