ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS IN VICTORIAN NOVELS: AN ANALYSIS OF HARD TIMES, DAVID COPPERFIELD AND NORTH AND SOUTH

This study seeks to analyze three significant Victorian novels in terms of their social and environmental consciousness. In order to reveal that Victorian Fiction was an effective means to fight against the social problems and environmental degredation, Hard T?mes and Dav?d Copperfield by Charles Dickens and North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell were chosen. This study attempts to reveal the connection between the Industrial Revolution and social and environmental problems arising from it in the novels Hard T?mes and North and South. This study also attempts to analyze Dav?d Copperfield by Charles Dickens to elucidate several social problems such as prostitution and poverty in Victorian Fiction. In order to reveal how both Dickens and Gaskell drew their characters in a way that reflects the typical Victorian society, major characters will be analyzed. As a result, this study elucidates the environmental and social problems in all three novels and the way the writers display them
