DIGITAL GAMES AND DIGITAL VIOLENCE AWARENESS: A COMPERATIVE ANALYSIS MADE ON PARENTS AND CHILDREN

Today, the effect of computers and internet opportunities are becoming visual day by day. The prevalent usage of these technologies effected the life style of children. It even became an important component of daily life. Therefore this interaction is not limited with virtual media but is conveyed to social sphere and becomes effective on many behaviors of children. Digital games which are one of the usage environments of information and communication technologies are followed by great interest by children. These games, apart from being educative and informative, can have harmful effects on children and young people due to the violence primitives. Children playing violent games are inured to violence in real life and may show tendency to these behaviors. Therefore children may perform violent acts when appropriate. With the prevalent usage of such game software by children and young people violence tendency in community may increase and violence may become natural. If computer dependency starting in small ages continues in further stages, digital game playing action may become a field for pleasure and relief for children. Together with theincrease of children age intervals, the control of their parents on them decreases and therefore children may be directed to games which include more violence. This study aims to determine the awareness of children at secondary school age and their parents towards the violence in computer games. For this purpose data was obtained by survey method which was applied to 100 students in secondary school (selected by quota sampling method) and 100 of their parents and the data was analyzed by using SPSS program. In the research gender was independent variable for children and parents while dependent variables for children were children being affected from violence, violence being imitated and violence being approved. The dependent variables for parents are intervening to the game including violence, providing security and conscious usage. In the aforementioned study the reactions of children towards violence change according to gender while the awareness of parents does not change according to gender.
