Design is an investigative and a problem solving process that operates under certain restrictions. Main motive of this process is to find a sustainable and creative solution in order to address the need by defining the problem. Traditional design methods conduct conscious processes, which can be defined as instinctive foreseen steps of design-based research activity. As a result of a product of this practice is formed through repetitive and planned practices of active learning, design research concept is achieved. Design research is about how designers work, think and carry out their designs. It is related to how man-made objects are shaped by the concept of design and it lays emphasis on products of the action of design, how an artificial object is perceived and what it meant. Design research concept that is generally known in academia, started to become widespread in industrial design and other branches of design. Design Research Science that the craftsmen never met, deals with analytic approaches and methodology to form design process, to plan production, to supervise and develop these subjects. Design research supports the designer’s creative decision development, provides production of the “new” different than the “ordinary” and “traditional” by increasing the awareness towards methodology. In this research, we interviewed craftsmen who design traditional textile products in an intention of defining the traditional design process paces, explaining the contrast and analogy of design research methodology and traditional textile design. After the interpretation and discussion of the research findings, the comparison between the design research methodology and traditional textile design is given. Moreover an algorithm which was derived from Reeves model of Design Based Research (DBR) methodology together with the recommendations on how to use this methodology in traditional textile design to protect our cultural heritage with original and qualified textile collections are presented
