DERTLIS FEZ-RHYMED POEM WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF SOCIAL LIFE IN TURKISH FOLK POETRY

Abstract

Author(s): Hüseyin ÖZCAN

Literary Works reflect social life of their time through the perspectives of poets and writers. Minstrel Literature has always carried out a function of transferring social value system to our time aesthetically. Many researchers commonly agree upon the fact that folk poetry has often dealt with issues related to social life. When Mahmud the second issued a decree forcing men to wear fez, there had been an upheaval and people rioted against it. Dertli, a prominent poet of the era, praised fez in one of his poems. This poem constitutes a significant example regarding the relationship of literature both with social life and governance. Literary Works are not merely texts of aesthetic pleasure; they also have the characteristics of being a document that reflects social and cultural life of the society.
